Deactivating or deleting your Jwuma account

· 4 min read · account, privacy, how it works
In Settings you can deactivate your account, which stops new invitations and keeps your history so you can come back later, or delete it, which permanently erases your personal data. A deletion request has a ten-day window to change your mind before it becomes irreversible, and completes within thirty days.
The short version
- Deactivating and deleting are two separate, clearly separated options in Settings.
- Deactivating is reversible at any time by a link emailed when you deactivate.
- Deleting has a ten-day window to withdraw the request before it is irreversible.
- A deletion request completes within thirty days of being made.
- Identity documents, biometric data and your profile are deleted; payout and tax records are kept as required by law.
- Re-applying after a voluntary deletion is possible after twenty-four months.
What is the difference between deactivating and deleting?
Deactivating stops new task invitations and platform communications without closing your account. Your work history, badges and course progress stay as they are, and you can reactivate at any time using a link sent to your email when you deactivate.
Deleting is permanent. It erases your profile, identity documents, biometric data and application history, and once it completes you cannot sign back into that account. Because it cannot be undone once it runs, Settings puts it behind a confirmation screen with a checkbox, rather than a single click.
If you are unsure which one you want, deactivating is the safer choice: it can always be followed by a deletion request later, and a deletion request cannot be turned into a deactivation after it completes.
What happens after I ask to delete my account?
You get an email confirming the request, with a reference number and a link to withdraw it. For the first ten days, that link restores your account to normal and cancels the deletion — after that, the request is treated as final and cannot be withdrawn from the account itself.
The deletion itself completes within thirty days of the original request, not immediately. If you are still owed a payout, deletion waits until that payout has gone out; it does not forfeit money you have already earned.
Once it completes, you get one final email confirming it is done. Your email address is freed up for reuse by this point, including by you, subject to the re-application rule below.
What gets deleted, and what is kept?
Deleted: your profile, your identity documents and the biometric data derived from them, your applications, interview and assessment records, your direct messages with staff, and your activity and notification history.
Kept, with your identity removed from the record rather than the record itself: your payout history and any tax records the law requires us to keep, the fact that a sanctions screening was run and what it found, and the record of any enforcement decision made about the account. None of these is kept in a form that still identifies you to anyone reading it.
Work you delivered to a client before deleting your account stays with that client under the terms it was produced on, with your identity removed from it.
Can I sign up again later?
After a voluntary deletion, yes — as a new applicant, starting twenty-four months from the date the deletion completed. None of your previous history, qualifications or standing carries over to the new account; it is a fresh start, not a reopened one.
If your account was closed for a policy violation rather than a voluntary deletion, re-applying is not permitted. The specific reasons this applies to are listed in the terms of service.
Deactivating rather than deleting avoids this question entirely, since the account and its history are still there whenever you reactivate.
People also ask
Can I change my mind after asking to delete my account?
Yes, for ten days. The confirmation email includes a link that restores your account to normal. After ten days the request is final.
Will deleting my account affect money I am owed?
No. Deletion does not proceed while a payout is still outstanding to you; it waits until that payout has been sent.
Does deactivating my account delete anything?
No. Deactivating only stops new invitations and communications. Your history, badges and course progress are kept exactly as they are until you reactivate or later choose to delete the account instead.
How long does deleting my account actually take?
Up to thirty days from the original request, not immediately — this covers the ten-day window to change your mind plus the time to process the deletion itself.
