Is AI data work legitimate, and how to spot a platform that is not

Is AI data annotation work a scam?

AI data work is legitimate and large. The sector also contains genuinely bad platforms. The reliable tests are simple: a real platform never asks you to pay anything, states the rate before you commit, does not require unpaid production work, and gives a written reason when it rejects you or closes your account.

The short version

  • No legitimate platform ever asks a contributor to pay for training, equipment or access.
  • A rate should always be visible before you reserve work, never only after delivery.
  • Unpaid production work is a warning sign, distinct from an unpaid application assessment.
  • Accounts closed with no reason given is a documented problem across several large platforms.
  • Published worker sentiment scores are a useful external check on any platform.
